• Yes you have to have a router. This just strengthens the connection. My husband has one on the desktop upstairs. He's happy with it.

• This product just allowed my laptop to receive the wifi signal from the router, which is two stories below my office. This is not a signal booster, it is an external antenna to supplement the internal wi-fi antenna in my laptop.
