Personally within 10-20 feet has been best for me and placing in a central location, usung a wifi extender, in between all 4 camera's resolved connectivity issues. Before i relocated it to a central.location closing ny bedroom door decreased the signal and caused it to freeze and one in my backyard ourdoors barelybwork which is about 20 feet away outdoors.
