I have it connected to a cable modem since my ISP is the local cable company. If you access your ISP via another means, than the answer is it depends. You will have to have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and you will have to pay them a fee. AX5400 is a wireless router. Unless you need more than 4 ethernet ports, you don't need a router or switch to go with it.
