according to the Owner's Manual there are two options for connecting to the modem and the port not used for that purpose can be used as an additional wired device connection. This is one reason I chose this router. That said, I have not actually connected to the secondary yellow RJ45 port yet. The setup asked which port would be used for the modem (WAN) connection, so it does know what I am doing. your question says "router" probably instead of modem (WAN) in your last sentence.
