I haven't tried doing this for a while, but my experience is that this is not a good way to go. In the past I have found that the USB simply doesn't have the resilience to cope. Instead, use a NASDrive. I currently have a 3TB drive hooked into the router, it does double-duty as a backup drive and a music server and works great. I haven't tried higher capacity drives or dual drives but i see no reason why it shouldn't work.
