Does this offer backwards connectivity as in 2.4? null

Absolutely! The router and each satellite has a dedicated 2.4ghz and 5ghz band and a 2nd hidden 5ghz band to communicate with each other. You have 1 combined login and your 2.4 devices will automatically connect at 2.4. Works very well, but would like to see ability to separate bands for each satellite so I can assign each device to specific satellites though.
