The G3100 is currently the most advanced router that Verizon offers, though you can use other other third party routers if you do not have FIOS TV or simply connect your Orbi base unit to the ONT (box where the fiber comes into your house) and dispense with a separate router altogether. The Orbi will serve as a router. If you have FIOS TV, in order to get the program guide and to use some of the DVR features, you will be better off using Verizon's router, like the G3100 along with the Orbi system. If you have FIOS TV, connect the Orbi base station WAN port to one of the four LAN ports on the G3100. Turn off both WiFi bands in the G3100. Configure the Orbi base unit in "AP Mode" or you will have two devices (Orbi and G3100) competing to assign IP address.

I upgraded my modem as my previous modem/router was several years old and could not handle the download speeds on my current plan. If your current modem gets you the speeds you are paying for, it will not be necessary to upgrade your modem. Hope this helps.
