Your modem connects you to the internet through your internet service provider. It does determine what top speed you can get from the ISP. So if you have modem that can feed 200Mbps to your router and your router is capable of delivering 6Gbps to your devices, you will be limited to speeds of 200Mbps through your router. Your modem and ISP speed will be the bottle neck.
