“Does this work for a desktop PC that has previously only used Ethernet connection, or do I need the wi fi adapter that goes inside the motherboard with the external antennas? My desktop seems to be an older model 2008 has no wi fi.”

You can use this on pretty much any desktop regardless of ethernet capability. All you need is a USB port, preferably a high speed and just install the driver on the disk it comes with.

It can be used in place of an internal card that has went bad or to add dual band to a computer that has only a single band WIFI card. It will also ADD wifi capability to a device that didnt have WIFI, so yes it will work for a desktop PC that has previously only used Ethernet connection.
