The 3.5-5.6 has better overall light exposure but comes in a bit heavier and pricier. There's very little difference in everyday photo quality which is why you would have that magnitude of zoom anyway. It's a fair everyday travel lens. If you have the money, I'd go with the 28-300 (FX) lens. Although quite a bit heavier, I believe the quality difference is compelling.
