This lens has a 58mm filter thread; the best investment you can make to protect any lens is a UV filter (generally about $5). A UV filter will help cut haze on outdoor shots (nothing too dramatic) but other than that will have no affect on your photography-it's true benefit is in protection. In case the front of your lens bumps against something/falls face down/dirt gets kicked up it's much better to replace a cheap filter than an expensive lens! As far as additional filters, that all depends on the types of pictures you're taking and what sort of artistic vision you have for them. For example, I take a lot of shots with moving water so I use a neutral density filter to smooth out the water into a much more pleasing motion blur type movement.
