The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is a versatile lens that works well for both long shots and closer ones. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 4.6 ft. so it will be necessary to stand back from your subject by at least that distance when focusing - but you can then zoom in to make up for the added distance. If you are looking for a lens specifically for shooting portraits then consider a fixed focal length lens (prime) like the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Standard Lens which has a minimum focus distance of 0.98 ft. . A prime lens will not zoom to bring objects closer, but it will offer better low light performance and more control over how much background blur (bokeh) is in your shots.
