Yes, You need another lens. You'll want take close up pictures of several animals far from you.

I have the kit lens of 18-55 and it only a few pounds heavier. I would recommend you taking your camera with you to best buy and try out their sample and see how it will feel to you. That is exactly what I did and I was sold. Enjoy your trip.

Your camera's sensor, which Nikon denotes as DX-type, creates a crop factor with the 55-300mm lens. This means, the effective field of view for the 300mm telephoto end of this lens is actually 450mm.
