Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I just purchased the Nikon 55-300. I had tried it out on my D5300 and the weight is great. I plan on using it while traveling this summer as well. I have the kit lens of 18-55 and it only a few pounds heavier. I would recommend you taking your camera with you to best buy and try out their sample and see how it will feel to you. That is exactly what I did and I was sold. Enjoy your trip.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. For spending under $600, this is a very good lens to take close up shots while on your Safari. Your camera's sensor, which Nikon denotes as DX-type, creates a crop factor with the 55-300mm lens. This means, the effective field of view for the 300mm telephoto end of this lens is actually 450mm. Enclosed is some information that will assist you with understanding this concept: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/article/g588ouey/the-dx-and-fx-formats.html.
