Any modern Nikon lens with internal focusing motor should work with your 3100. I believe it should work although I have not tested it on your camera.

For future reference make sure, if you want to use Autofocus you purchase lenses with an AF-S designator. That signifies that the lens has Nikon's Silent Wave Focus Motor built-in to it. As the D3100 does not have a built-in focus motor, it will require lenses that do if you want to use autofocus. You can always attach a non-AF-S type lens, you will just need to focus manually.
