You can get close, but not as close as to be able to do any descent macro shots. For that you wold need a macro lens. If shooting full frame, this would be an nice all-around lens for almost anything but macro. If shooting cropped, this would work best as a portrait lens. Either way, a must have lens for any Nikon shooter. Just don't expect any macro abilities.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. With a minimum focus distance of 1.48 ft it will let you get close to your subject(s). The magnification ratio is only 0.15X though, which means you're not going to reproduce the image anywhere near Macro levels which are considered to be 1:1 or 1.0X. This lens produces images about 1/6th the size of macro.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It will not produce a true macro shot, since you cannot focus up close, but you can crop to get a macro type shot. The sharpness and clarity of this lens is superb, so you can create very good crops.

Please try again later. The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Standard Lens is a popular choice for a wide range of photography including portraiture and low light situations where the photographer can not use a flash or is looking to capture the scene with available light. While this is an excellent lens, NIKKOR Micro lenses are created specifically for close-up photography. Micro lenses like the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens and the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens allow the photographer to focus very close into the subject and reproduce them at a 1:1 lifesize ratio on the sensor. These lenses are popular for subjects, such as flowers, insects and small products.
