The 50mm f/1.8G is an FX lens. When this is put on a DX camera, it will have a 1.5x crop factor. Your actual angle of view will be 75mm. It is 100% compatible with the D5500.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It works just fine. I have the D3300 and get amazing pictures. Just remember that on a DC, it will crop more like a 72 mm rather than a 50 mm like it would on an FX camera.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It doesn't hurt the image quality to use a FX lens on a DX camera but it effectively increases the focal distance since the real image is bigger than the sensor. When I use my 50mm it's more like a 75mm. Using a DX lens on a FX camera does decrease the image quality because the real image is smaller than the sensor.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.FX lenses can be used on DX cameras without issue, so have no fear. It's only when DX lenses are used on FX cameras that the image is altered (and this is an over-simplification for the purposes of this answer).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You would be able to use this lens on your 5500 without any issues. This is a normal lens on a FX camera, but on your 5500 it would act more like a 75mm lens, which still is very good range for portraits.
