It will work an a D3100, which is a "DX" type Nikon camera. On a DX camera, this lens is a short telephoto. That's good for portraits (torso and head shots). It's not particularly good for "long range" shots. That's when you want an 80 to 120mm lens on a DX camera. The kit lens that came with the D3100 probably zooms out to 65 or 70mm. For long range shots, that's better than 50mm.

This lens is more of a mid range all purpose type lens that is an amazing choice when shooting in lower light conditions. Keep in mind that this is a fixed lens, also known as a prime lens, so you will not be able to zoom with it. You will be able to get fairly close to your subject, but this may not be the best lens for very long range shots. If you would like a fully all purpose lens that will get both wide shots and long distance, you may want to look into the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR lens.
