The f/1.8 aperture is excellent for lower light shooting situations. What you need to access is - will 85mm be enough of a reach to capture the action that you want to capture.

Having a bigger aperture should make a big difference in how much light reaches your sensor. However, you also always have to consider your ISO and shutter speed.

I have not tried it for football. I have the 70mm-200mm f/2.8 for football. I purchase this lens specifically for indoor basketball and it works great!
