The D5500 does not have a built-in autofocus motor. The camera requires lenses that have the motor built-in to them. Nikon denotes these type of lenses with an AF-S designator. This stands for Nikon's Silent Wave Autofocus motor. It is extremely quiet and fast in operation. The 85mm f/1.8G is an AF-S type lens. It is 100% compatible with your camera. Just a side note, even lenses without the AF-S designator can be used. You would not have autofocus, but you can focus manually.
