This lens allows you to shoot so close that the size of the subject you’re shooting is the same size on your sensors. so you can shoot an image of a penny and the size on the sensor would be actual size. I think you’re referring to the focusing limit switch that can be set to either “Full” or 0.5M to infinity. On “Full”, it obviously focuses on it’s full range, on 0.5 to infinity, it doesn’t focus on close up objects, so it won’t hunt as much when no shooting macro.

I don't know the exact distance for 1:1 focus, but I have found when I set the focus at 1:1 and move the camera until the subject is in focus, it is about 6-7 inches from the point of focus. You might be able to find the exact distance on Nikon's site.
