The d3000 requires a lens that has a built in AF-S motor. The Nikon 70-300 VR lens has a motor built in it, so it will work for your camera. The 70-300 VR is a pretty large and heavy lens so unless you really need the reach to 300mm you may what to opt for the Nikon 55-200mm VR lens.

In this case, DX lenses are smaller and lighter and designed for the smaller image sensor of a DX camera. An FX lens covers it and works just fine, as well as being compatible with an FX camera should you upgrade in the future.
