The Zoom-NIKKOR 55-300mm lens is 100% compatible with your D5100. For future reference make sure, if you want to use Autofocus you purchase lenses with an AF-S designator. That signifies that the lens has Nikon's Silent Wave Focus Motor built-in to it. As the D5100 does not have a built-in focus motor, it will require lenses that do if you want to use autofocus.
