Depending on what kind of portraits you're taking...yes. Typically you want a fixed 50 mm lens for standard portrait pictures because the quality is a lot better then a lens that has a range of apertures you can change. But this lens is perfect for so many different things and a standard portrait lens should be a purchase you make after you get a lens that can take multi purpose photographs.
