The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens has a fixed aperture of f/4. This constant maximum aperture helps to maintain exposure settings throughout the entire zoom range, for exceptionally vivid images. This lens can also reach a minimum aperture of f/22 for a full range of shooting possibilities.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Fixed f4 in this case means that f4 is the max aperture throughout the zoom range. But you can choose to use any other aperture. Some zoom lenses list f4/f5.6 as a max aperture. This means at its widest setting the max aperture is f4 but at its zoomed in setting the max aperture autimatically changes & will be f5.6 for example.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Fixed aperture means the aperture does not vary from its widest setting which in this case is f/4 at any zoom setting. You can always change the aperture to suit your style or needs. Some zoom lenses have a variable widest aperture and it will change on its own as you move through the zoom range. The lens may start out at f/3.5 at say 70mm and somewhere along the way to 300mm the widest aperture has changed to maybe f/4.5 or f/5.6 or even f/6.3. You can still change the aperture to any other available setting but you cannot maintain that f/3.5 widest aperture through the entire zoom range. This manufacturing decision allows the manufacturer to build and sell a more economical lens
