Are any other accessories needed? In order to use this product, is it necessary to buy a wireless adapter or does the remote work on its own? I have a D5100!

You do not need a wireless adapter. This remote will only connect with compatible cameras. Nikon's website will list what cameras it will work with.

You only needed the remote. Go to the setting on your Camera to identify the remote.

The ML-L3 Wireless Remote allows you to trigger the shutter release from a distance. You don’t need other accessories to use the ML-L3 Wireless remote with your Nikon D5100 DSLR camera. Please check with your Nikon D5100 manual for more information on using the wireless remote feature.
