No. If you have really hard water you may want to use a distilled water. Doing so will extend the life of your Ninja.
You can use normal tap water but depending upon the hardness and minerals in your area you may need to descale (clean your machine with vinegar) more often. I usually use filtered water from a britta picture but distilled water is recommend.
We just use the filtered water from the refrigerator and have had no issues and great coffee.

No special water is needed. Any coffee connoisseur would tell you to use good purified drinking water though. It's just like beer. You get out of it what you put into it. The better the ingredients, the better the finished product. If you want the best cup of coffee you can make yourself, use good purified water and freshly ground beans in this machine. Unless you want to spend in the $500 range, this thing will be your best bet!
