“Do you have to use the programmed buttons ? And are the low, high and pulse buttons Or just indicators for what speed it's running at? Can't tell from the pictures”

After powering on, you select from either section. You control the time with the high/low/pulse buttons. The Auto buttons are preprogrammed and will stop after the predetermined time. I just used it for the first time yesterday to slice onions and it was great. But I suggest you read through all the instructions for use carefully and keep them handy the first few times you use it. Enjoy!
