I think as long as you have access to his account. If that doesn’t work then you can send him the code and he can add it on the nintendo e shop.

You can log onto the Nintendo ID Account and add the eShop credit through there before making a game purchase you will be given an option to use an eShop card and add the funds that way but you don't need to complete the order. This will allow you to add the credit into that account. So you might need your son's login information.
