You do not, since there is technically no real multi-player aspect in No Man's Sky. The only thing online is needed for is to name and upload your species discoveries for other to stumble across in their game. You will never, ever see another person.

There really is no need fo PlayStation plus with this game. There is really no way for you and your friends to play together. It is still amazing though

No PS Plus is required. But you also cannot play with your friends, there is NO MULTIPLAYER. Don't waste your hard earned $$$ on this, it sucks and you will regret it.
