You need a phone to set up an account and to sync downloads and such. It does NOT use a phone when in use. It is a stand alone set. Basically you use the phone to search for apps you want, select them and the headset downloads them. You do not insert the phone into it, nor are you downloading anything to your phone, nor is the phone used during operation of the VR set at all.
