“Purchased this case and it does not fit iphone 5, could not get it to close, one of the inside clips that secures/closes the case presses against the volume button and will not release it. Is this case defective”

Chances are it is defective! I have never heard of an otter box case not fitting the phone. I would go back to the store and ask someone for help in relocating another one
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I've used the OtterBox defender series for my last two phones-- Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and iPhone 6s Plus...no problems with either. It sounds to my like you did get a defective case. I'd take it to Best Buy and see if they can help you.
