“Is this as protective as normal thicker otterbox cases? I like the drop protection of my current thick case but I like the this one! If not, what is the difference?”

This case is great because it is slimmer. However, the "downside" is that it doesn't protect your screen. It will not give you the same security from breakage as the Otterbox Defender case. I suggest purchasing a glass screen protector.
