“We just bought this model a few days ago but today I discovered that I can’t cook anything while the timer is going!? Is there a way to cook while the timer is going? Is mine defective? or poor design?”

• You can’t, I returned mine over this issue. Check out the GE 1.6, it can cook and time at the same time.
