“I have just viewed the first 5 of 174 questions regarding KX-TGE645M and noted conflicting answers. Response to Question 1 clearly states that there are 5 (five) handsets. THe response to Question 5 states only 4 (four) handsets. Which is correct?”

there may be a terminology problem!! there are 5 phones that you can talk on...5!! Some call one of the 5 phones a "base station" and the other 4 they call a hand set. Point is, if you want to talk, you have 5 portable phones to use, regardless of whether you count them as 4 + 1 or 5.
