A:AnswerOnly thing I can think of is that the "mute" button is on and that's why he's not hearing the messages. If the button marked Answer on/off is glowing red then he knows that the machine is answering the calls. If the play/stop button is blinking red then he knows that there's a message. If he pushes that button and then doesn't hear any messages then maybe the mute is on...but if it says no messages then I would bring it to the store and have the geek squad look at it.
