“We run hdmi from laptop to monitor and then sound out to existing stereo via headphone cable to hear the videos. Can we run a stereo headphone to male usb cable to this unit's usb port, and will the sound from videos then play on these speakers?”

Hello Jack! The USB port is for playing MP3 and other audio files from a USB storage device, not for receiving live audio input from the laptop. - S
