I use the default pebble app for reading text messages.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.By default, it displays notifications. Mine is sync'd with my iPhone 6 and I see every notification unless my phone is set to "do-not-disturb". You possibly have disabled notifications or have notifications set to be disabled if your phone is in "do-not-disturb" mode. On the watch, go to Settings->Notifications and peruse the options. On your phone, check if it has (and is set to) do-not-disturb.

Please try again later.I think you just need the Pebble App. I use it on iPhone and I've noticed that I don't get text messages unless my phone is connected to both Pebble and Pebble-LE in the bluetooth settings. Just make sure that when you go to the Pebble App it doesn't have a message that says 'Set up notifications' or something like that.
