It will work as a standard lightstrip when connected to only a hue bridge. But if you want the gradation effect synced with your tv you need the sync hue play box which is another 230.00 dollars. You can also use the hue sync pc app if you are using it around a computer monitor. I mean it’s incredible when you have both... but is a 500 dollar investment.

If you do not have the sync box you can change the colors on your phone but it will not change on its own. I find that having the sync box is such an awesome experience and it’s worth every penny.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I am pretty sure you need the sync box, as it is the conduit for the signal to pass from your device to the lights and TV. The lightstrip is connected via wifi (Hue Hub) to the Sync Box, but is super-responsive even without being physically attached. I think the actual processing all takes place there as it captures the colors, location and intensity via the signal coming from the Apple TV (or other streaming box or player) and passes those via wifi to the lightstrip at the same instant it passes the HDMI video/sound signals to the TV. (My rough setup: Apple TV > HDMI cable > Sync Box [wifi to Lightstrip] > HDMI cable > TV > HDMI cable > Soundbar) Without the Sync Box, it has no idea what the lights and colors should be doing because it cannot "see" the TV signal without that passthrough connection ... hope that makes sense.
