• Gen 2 you can use bridge with Apple's Homekit which allows you to control your Phillips Hue lights with Siri voice commands. For instance you could say "Siri turn on my living room lights".

• Main difference is that 2nd generation is compatible with Apple home kit. Other than that, I've had both and found the 2nd gen is way faster and better responsiveness with the Hue app, hue click, and the hue motion detectors
