It is required to use any lightstrip. Without that item, this extension will not function. The Philips Hue Light-strip Plus Dimmable LED Smart Light has the LED driver for the strip. I wish this item was titled by Phillips as a starter light-strip, because it is obscured that this is needed to use any other extension light-strip.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus Dimmable LED Smart Light is the main piece of the Hue lightstrip. It comes with the power supply. It's about 78 inches long. This item is the extension piec. It plugs into the main piece, doesn't have a power supply (you need the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus Dimmable LED Smart Light in order to use the extension) and is about half the length and much less expensive. (I submitted an earlier, incorrect answer to this same question, but I misunderstood the question at first... Sorry!)
