If you use 3rd generation bulbs you can indeed use them in cans. I have them in a bathroom over my shower in SEALED cans meant for halogen bulbs. The Hue bulbs are the same brightness and color as the halogens and have the advantage of color changes. I am even experimenting with the Echo Plus as my ONLY bridge. It is currently limited only by software which I am working to overcome with IFTTT and other software.
I would recommend:

I would suggest the br30 or the e26 for recessed lighting. I should point out that I am not an expert by any means. I just own many hue products and have tried many configurations throughout my home.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes they do work with recessed lighting.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don't think I would recommend a "closed fixture" for these lights. I tried one (warm white lighting) bulb in my porch fixture, it has a plastic cover on it and it burnt the plastic melting a hole in it. Because of the shape of the bulbs I am finding they don't fit into enclosed light fixtures, which is probably a clue to follow the Phillips Hue recommendations;)
