I haven't had any irritation issues, so haven't felt the need to try any pre-treatment. The shave I'm getting is what I expect from an electric shaver - not as close as a blade, but good enough.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I dry shave with this Phillips Norelco 4100 razer and get a very close shave with the dual openings on the shaving heads. The heads are lift and cut for longer hairs and round for the shorter hairs which does an excellent job for me with no skin irritation. The secret on these new shavers is when applying pressure to your face just let the shaver gently glide over your face without a lot of pressure unlike we used to have to do with th older electric razers. Thes 4100 shaver also is waterproof so you can wet shave with shaving cream if you want to. I have not tried the wet shave because the dry shave does a great job!
