Hello JGramc, Thanks for your interest in the Phyn Smart Water Sensor. The sensors do work on their own as standalone sensors. The Phyn Plus and/or Smart Water Assistant are not required. If the Sensor comes in contact with water, or notices increased humidity or low temperatures, it will send an alert to your phone and your Phyn app. Thank you, Phyn Customer Support
