This is a question to your question. HOw would you record shows and stuff from your tv unless your tv has a video output. That means there has to be a connection on your tv that sends the video picture out from the tv to this device along with a audio connection thats sends the sound from the tv to this device. if theres no output connections on your tv then this is not able to record anything from your tv. Im not sure if hdtv even have video outputs i maybe wrong tho.
