No you do not need to be connected via usb. It works through bluetooth and all controls work from receiver. As for radio fit i cannot answer it but its not recommended through crutchfield.com
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Can connect iPhone with Bluetooth, USB, or mini aux cable - all work great. Same for iPod, though older iPod may not have Bluetooth. Not sure about your Dodge Ram, mine fit perfect in my F-150. Install kit ran around $25, labor for install just under $100. Well worth the money unless you have the time to look up install kit and actual install. A great buy for the money.
