Yes, you can wear only one, and using the BackBeat phone app you can choose which one connects to your phone. Also, the more-open design of the headphones (as opposed to a sealing silicone ear bud) makes it easier to hear things around you.

While you can actually hear your surroundings really well with both buds in, you can use them one at a time, with either the right or left earbud. The only caveat is that the right bud is the master so if you want to use the left bud on it's own you have to turn off the right one (or put it in the case) and then turn the left one off and on in order to re-pair it with your phone.

With one in, pressing the button pauses music, while double tapping skips to the next song and triple tapping goes back a song. You can increase the volume if you use both by tapping the left once or decrease volume by tapping and holding the left
