How many photos can I save on this device -- I think my wife may have 3000 pictures in I Photo and she is worried that iff she buys a new I MAC that the old stuff is not going to transfer quite as easily as the Apple Tech guys suggest.... null

I am not sure about 3000 photos but we stored over 1500!

If her photos are 2mb each x 3000 photos you would 6000mbs. This drive has a total of 64,000mbs of space. 
You will be fine. 
I would recommend that she buy an external hard drive with a few TBs - so much more space.
