“I have downloaded my photo to the pny and transfered to my computer. I cannot view the photos because they are in a heic format. Do I really need to purchase something else to view them?”

Your iPhone format setting is creating the heic format. Go to Settings, Camera, Format and change to “Most compatible”. You can download a free convert, to convert from a heic to jpg, I believe it’s called iConvert.
