You would need to format it before doing anything on the PS4 with it. We actually have one dedicated for our two PS4 for when they need initialized or backup and it is so convenient. If you need bigger store I'd recommend a higher storage space external SSD or replacing the internal hard drive to a higher storage SSD. It is super easy to do and they have directions on their site on how to do it. Western digital or Samsung has great ones. Western digital is my go to and it is cost friendly. I added a SanDisk 1 tb storage on both ours not too long ago and they are amazing. The games and everything runs so much smoother and the fans are much more quieter.
