• Yes, just will not be as fast if running one 8 and one 4. But if running three 4's. All the same speed will have greater effect.

• First, you don't want to do that. You need to keep each slot balanced or you won't get the full amount of RAM. You will spend all that money and maybe realize 10gb. So either see if your computer can handle 8gb x 2 or buy a laptop with a better graphics card or solid state drive next time. That is most likely what is slowing you down.
